in a small and narrow clearing...

A three-day journey on foot from Carlton near Selby in North Yorkshire to The Glen near Baildon in West Yorkshire, walking continuously for eight hours a day.

During the spring of 1947 concern that the British harvest was in jeopardy led the UK Government to attract farm workers, including school children, back to the summer harvest camps set up during the war. The summer of 1947 also saw the arrival of a new and virulent poliomyelitis virus which began to rapidly spread across the country with cases reaching a peak in early August. Whilst the virus would return in subsequent years until a vaccine became available in the late 1950s, the 'polio summer' of 1947 remains as the worst ever poliovirus epidemic in England and Wales with 500 deaths and more than 8000 cases leaving many young people disabled for life.

This three day walk retraces the journey undertaken by my uncle Dr A. E. Jones in the summer of 1947, on his return by bicycle from a school harvest camp after falling ill.
